CHAPTER 7: Water Activities & The Marine Environment

If you have a vessel that is longer than 40 feet in length, with a berth and a galley, and your vessel is certified to operate beyond three nautical miles from shore, then you must have a Waste Management Plan onboard.

If you are the boat’s captain, it is your responsibility to write and implement this plan.

What does a Waste Management Plan do? It gives clear directions to your passengers and crew for how to properly discharge the following waste materials:

  • Sewage and hazardous waste;
  • Garbage and food waste;
  • Plastics, glass, and aluminum; as well as
  • Oil and gasoline spills
