CHAPTER 1: The Boat

Welcome to Chapter 1

The first step in becoming a safe boat operator is getting to know your way around a boat. You need to be able to identify a boat’s different parts and know what they do.

Learning these boat basics is what we’re going to do in chapter one.

By the end of this chapter, you’ll know:

  • The different parts of a boat and what they're called;
  • The different types of boat hulls;
  • The three main types of boat engines; and
  • The different classes of boat, as determined by their length.

You'll also know:

  • How to find out the maximum number of people your boat can carry;
  • The dangers of overloading or overpowering your boat; and
  • What a Hull Identification Number (or HIN) is.

Let's get started!
